The first bridges were spans made of wooden logs or planks and eventually stones, using a simple support and crossbeam arrangement. The arch was first used by the Roman Empire for bridges and aqueducts, some of which still stand today. The Romans also used cement, which reduced the variation of strength found in natural stone. Brick and mortar bridges were built after the Roman era, as the technology for cement was lost then later rediscovered. Rope bridges, a simple type of suspension bridge, were used by the Inca civilization in the Andes mountains of South America, just prior to European colonization in the 1500s. During the 18th century there were many innovations in the design of timber bridges by Hans Ulrich, Johannes Grubenmann, and others. The first engineering book on building bridges was written by Hubert Gautier in 1716. With the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century, truss systems of wrought iron were developed for larger bridges, but iron did not have the tensile strength to support large loads. With the advent of steel, which has a high tensile strength, much larger bridges were built, many using the ideas of Gustave Eiffel.

Come find this cache but Don't Stop on the Bridge.Bikers come flying down and don't slow down but they do yell at you even if you are not on the Bridge.

Good thing we brought the kids along for this cache. They are good for retrieving. As B was doing the DIRTY work, he was treated to 3 horses passing by. He was laughing so hard I think the horses got scared. SL. Thanks for the fun.

We (pixshafer & tommyboygeo) decided to finish up the string of caches along Quail Hill Trail (is that what this is called?). We dropped off Lucky at playschool, picked up coffee and bagels at It's a Grind on Culver in Irvine (BTW I highly recommend this place), and parked at the trailhead. We thought we could do the next four and get back to our car in time to pick up the little guy from school. That was VERY positive thinking! We loved the walk to this one and I thought this little bridge was really lovely. Since tommyboy has a bad back I had to do the dirty work. It was worth it though. I got a water bottle strap that attaches to my swagbag. I have been looking for something just like this. Thank you to the person who put it there. We left a mini-koosh. What a great deal for us! TFTC.

This one was a bit of a back breaker for us. While Blaze spotted the cache, the more nimble(?) Forshir retrieved it. It was kind of scary with all the bikes going by. A little bit dirtier than when we started out but oh well. TFTC

We had to wait awhile for hikers to pass by (some people w..a..l..k.. really slow, how can you get any exercise out of it), so we can take care of business. Thanks for the fun!

Oh, a bridge! No trolls under it, when your buddy Billy Goat gruffly investigated. I watched for cyclists while jeffster retrieve the container.
Left a little car toy that came with a 4 pack of AA batteries (not included).
On the way from here towards the Guard Shack, observed a hawk on wing, hunting and riding the wind ... I wonder if that was lagunahawk?

Fun cache with a fun title. Like the write up too. The location was different and fun all at the same time. The rain does make it a touch more challenging; however, I think my kids wouldn't have a problem with it. Beta Tester.

I like these bridges. There are a couple bridges like this in Orange, and they both have geocaches hidden somewhere in their understructure (GCMQ55 and GCXX8V). The mud had mostly dried, so after retrieving the cache my clothes are not as dirty as I thought I would be. My mind still is, though, but that's a log entry for another time. It seemed noisy and dangerous in the cache, especially when a bicyclist goes over the bridge, so I'll take the bunny travel bug back to Costa Mesa so it won't be scared. I left an empty 512-Meg jump drive. Thanks for the opportunity to exert myself!
